Overview

If the Unit were to put out a wanted ad for its ideal rider it might look something like this: Cromoly, single-speed badass ISO someone to adventure with. Some people call me rigid. I think I’m just classy. I like long rides in the sun (or mud, or snow), will carry all your stuff, will last forever, and promise to be the bike that turns heads wherever you go. I can be converted to a 12-speed if that’s your thing. Like food? I have Bento box mounts too! Let’s party!

Geometry & Ride Characteristics

CAD of Large Kona Unit (Use BikeInsights.com to compare/contrast bicycle geometries)

The Kona Unit is designed with a geometry that prioritizes both utility and comfort for long-distance, off-road adventures. The 110mm fork spacing allows for larger tires, enhancing traction and stability when the bike is loaded with gear. The absence of rear shocks and a simplified, single-speed drivetrain not only reduce maintenance but also free up space for frame bags and other essentials. The bike’s top tube offers a comfortable reach for extended saddle time and extra room for a frame bag. Its slack head tube angle and optimized bottom bracket height contribute to stability and control, especially when navigating technical terrains with a loaded setup. The chainstays are thoughtfully designed to balance stability and manoeuvrability, making the Kona Unit a reliable choice for bikepacking.

Riding the Kona Unit offers a raw and direct experience, thanks to its rigid frame and single-speed setup. The absence of rear shocks and a simplified drivetrain means you feel closely connected to the terrain. Its hydraulic disc brakes provide reliable stopping power, while the larger tire options offer good traction and a smoother ride over rough surfaces. The bike’s geometry and components come together to offer a ride that is both challenging and rewarding, ideal for purists who seek a no-frills adventure.

  • Top Tube Length: Ranging from 582mm to 675mm across sizes, the Kona Unit’s top tube is designed to offer a comfortable reach. This is crucial for long hours in the saddle, especially during bikepacking expeditions. Compared to other bikes, a longer top tube can also provide more space for a frame bag.
  • Head Tube Angle: At 68.0 degrees for all sizes, the slack head tube angle contributes to the bike’s stability. This is particularly beneficial for bikepacking where control and stability are paramount, especially when navigating through technical terrains with a loaded bike.
  • Seat Tube Angle: The seat tube angle is 75.0 degrees across all sizes, which is relatively steep. This helps in efficient power transfer and allows for a more aggressive riding position, differentiating it from bikes with slacker seat tube angles.
  • Chainstay Length: At 430mm for all sizes, the chainstays are designed to be long enough to provide stability and weight distribution, yet short enough to maintain maneuverability. This is a balanced approach compared to bikes with either too long or too short chainstays.
  • Bottom Bracket Drop and Height: With a 65mm drop and 310mm height across all sizes, the bottom bracket is optimized to offer sufficient ground clearance while maintaining a low center of gravity. This is essential for handling a bike that’s loaded with gear, setting it apart from bikes with higher or lower bottom brackets.
  • Wheelbase: Ranging from 1115mm to 1211mm, the wheelbase is long enough to provide stability but not so long that it becomes cumbersome. This makes the Kona Unit well-suited for bikepacking, offering a balanced blend of comfort, stability, and utility.
  • Fork Length and Offset: With a 470mm fork length and 50mm offset across all sizes, the Kona Unit offers a stable and predictable ride, especially when the bike is loaded, distinguishing it from bikes with different fork specifications.

vs. the Kona Unit X

The Kona Unit X, with its wider range of gears, is a slightly more expensive version of the Kona Unit. While both bikes share the same frame, the primary differences lie in their groupset and brakes as follows:

  • Drivetrain
    • Kona Unit: Features an FSA Comet Modular crankarm with a 32t chainring and a KT 18t cassette. This single-speed setup is straightforward and low-maintenance, ideal for riders who prefer a consistent cycling experience.
    • Kona Unit X: Comes with a Prowheel 12-speed crankarm and a Shimano Deore rear derailleur, paired with a 10-51t 12-speed cassette. This offers a wider range of gearing options, making it versatile for tackling various terrains from steep climbs to fast descents.
  • Brakes
    • Kona Unit: Equipped with Alhonga HT472 Hydraulic brake calipers and rotors sized at 180mm front and 160mm rear. These provide adequate stopping power but may not offer the same level of modulation as more premium options.
    • Kona Unit X: Features Shimano MT410 Hydraulic brakes with centerlock Shimano RT10 rotors sized at 180mm front and 160mm rear. These offer better stopping power and modulation, enhancing overall ride safety.

vs. the Surly Krampus Rigid

The Surly Krampus Rigid is designed for stability and comfort, ideal for long-distance bikepacking and off-road treks. Its relaxed geometry and longer wheelbase contribute to a more laid-back ride. On the other hand, the Kona Unit is built for agility and quick handling, with its steeper seat tube angle and shorter chainstays making it more responsive. While both bikes excel in durability and off-road capability, the Krampus is geared towards those who prioritize steady, comfortable rides, whereas the Kona Unit is for riders seeking more maneuverability.

  • Drivetrain

    • Kona Unit: Provides a more agile and responsive ride, better suited for quick maneuvering and varied terrains, offering a lively feel that some riders prefer.
  • Geometry
    • Surly Krampus Rigid: Designed with a longer wheelbase and relaxed angles for stability and comfort, making it a solid choice for those who prioritize a stable ride.
    • Kona Unit: Features a steeper seat tube angle and shorter chainstays for quicker handling and responsiveness, appealing to those who enjoy a more active riding style.

vs. the Bombtrack Beyond+

In contrast, the Kona Unit focuses on simplicity and agility, featuring a Reynolds 520 Butted Cromoly frame and a single-speed setup. While the Bombtrack offers a more versatile and customizable ride suited for challenging terrains, the Kona Unit provides a straightforward, responsive experience ideal for riders who prefer less complexity. Both bikes offer different levels of specialization, catering to distinct rider preferences.

Features

Rigid Kona Plus Fork: The Kona Unit features a specialized Kona Plus Fork with 110mm spacing, designed to accommodate a variety of wheel and tire sizes. This fork design is a standout feature, offering both versatility and durability, which is not commonly found in bikes at this price point.

Single-Speed Setup: The Kona Unit comes with a single-speed drivetrain, which significantly simplifies the cycling experience. This setup eliminates the complexities associated with multiple gears, such as the need for frequent gear shifting and the potential for derailleur issues. It’s particularly beneficial for bikepacking adventures where you want to minimize mechanical complications. The single-speed design also allows for more straightforward maintenance, making it easier to manage on long trips.

Flat Bar with Optimized Geometry: The Kona Unit X comes with a flat bar that has been optimized for both comfort and control. The flat bar design contributes to a more upright riding position, which is ideal for long-distance bikepacking and trail riding. This ergonomic feature is a unique selling point, as many similarly priced bikes come with less comfortable handlebar setups

Bag, Rack and Fender Mounting Points

The Kona Unit is well-equipped with a variety of mounting points to cater to all your bikepacking needs:

Front and Rear Rack Mounts: The Kona Unit comes with front and rear rack mounts, offering the flexibility to carry a variety of bags, gear, or panniers. These mounts are strategically placed to distribute weight evenly, making it easier to manage the bike’s handling during long rides.

3-Pack Rack Fork Mounts: These mounts are located on the front fork and are ideal for carrying water bottles or small bags. Their placement allows for easy access while riding, making hydration and snacking more convenient.

Bottle Cage Mounts: The bike features bottle cage mounts on both the top and bottom of the down tube, and sometimes on the seat tube as well. These mounts are designed for easy reach and stability, ensuring your water bottles stay secure even on rough terrains.

Top Tube Mounts: There is a mount on the top tube specifically designed for a fuel tank bag. This is perfect for keeping essential items like snacks or a phone within easy reach, especially during longer rides where quick access is crucial.

Under Downtube Mount: The Kona Unit also features a mount under the downtube, a common place for carrying an extra water bottle or a tool keg. This mount is particularly useful for long rides where extra hydration or tool access may be needed.

Fender Mounts: These mounts are located near the tires and are designed for attaching fenders. They are particularly useful for rides in muddy or wet conditions, helping to prevent mud and water spray.

great bike..but

I have enjoyed the Unit very much. the quality of the the bike is good and the service at Campfire excellent. The problem is the rear tire slightly rubs the seat tube. the chain is too tight to adjust it back any further. I had to change the gearing and replace the chain to make it rideable. Not happy
