It’s really encouraging and exciting that this year marked the first ever National Women’s Bicycling Summit, which recently took place in Long Beach, California. Streetfilms was there to capture images and remarks from the conference, which you can check out in their video below. I started in the bike industry at the age of 17, when I got my first job working at Absolute Bikes in Flagstaff, AZ. It was an amazing opportunity and made my journey through the world of cycling much easier. I was fortunate to be surrounded by a lot of fantastic people – male and female alike – along the way who encouraged me as female bike racer, female working in a bike shop, and female bike advocate. However, issues of gender inequality in cycling are very present and very real from the local bike shop, to the pages of your favorite bike magazine, all the way to the International Cycling Union, and everywhere in between. Conferences like this are a great step in the right direction to getting more women on bikes. I hope to be there next year! And in case you missed it, check out this Mighty Mom on a Bike! The Inaugural National Women’s Bicycle Summit from Streetfilms on Vimeo.
