For a 70-year-old grandmother from Wolf Point, planes, trains and automobiles have nothing on her Trek 7700.
Mary Madison, who pedaled her bicycle from Wolf Point to her 50th high school reunion in central California in 2003, took to the road again in May. This time her destination was Bar Harbor, Maine, one of only two states she’d never visited.
Madison started doing bicycle tours when she retired three years ago from her career as a diabetes educator for the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. When she was working full time, she said she didn’t have time to cycle 50 or more miles a day – for days on end. Her first distance trip was a 700-mile excursion with six other people in New Zealand in 2002.
“The group I was with told me afterward that they never thought I’d make it,” she said laughing.
