The Marathon Plus Tour is the ‘tour’ variation of the Schwalbe Marathon Plus range of expedition tires and it comes with a heavier tread pattern while retaining the same flat protection, making it capable in remote areas with dirt roads. The Marathon Plus Tour contains within its 67 TPI casing a “SmartGuard protection” made up of a 5 mm layer of flexible, patented Indian rubber. This combination of “flatless” smart guard protection and an aggressive tread pattern makes the Marathon Plus Tour ideal for tackling rough terrain even on a heavily loaded touring rig.

The Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tour is an off-road tire that makes short work of rugged terrain and promises to keep you cruising down dirt roads with minimal puncture drama. With these tires carrying you and your gear, you don’t have to focus on dodging road litter, simply point your wheels and plow through any kind of terrain no matter how rough it may be.

Marathon Tour Plus... A year later!

I put the tires on about a month prior to departing Rapid City, SD, and cycled through the Black Hills into WY and crossed through the backcountry to the Bighorns. Continued to Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Bridger Mountains, and parts of Shoshone forests on several occasions. The Colorado Rockies on paved and unpaved accents and descents from Fort Colling to Estes Park and following along the scenic route through Nederlands to Idaho Springs taking OHV routes. Highway to Georgetown and south into Pike and San Isabel Forest, and Elevenmile Canyon. To Salida (go visit Oveja Negra!), Crestone, Great Sand Dunes, and crossed the border into New Mexico. From Questa to Taos were all forest cycling, highways to byways towards Sante Fe, and more to Albuquerque having diverted eastern through the forest and country-side again until ToC. West up the Gila and down into Silver City and hitched a ride in Lordsburg (not cycling I-10), was dropped off in Tucson, AZ. City cycling around the 100-mile bike path on several occasions (unloaded) and a mini-tour to Mesa via desert trails and circled back around through the Tonto Forest, specifically taking the Apache Tail, no vehicles allowed on the other half of the mountain to Roosevelt Lake. Secondary roads to Oracle and a "hike a bike" the backside of Mount Lemon and spectacular coast down Catalina Hwy. To not continue longer with the summary of the tour and cut the story short. The Marathon Tour Plus tires, after having no remaining tread, the blue inner material was showing at many spots and no longer holding air was when they finally gave out: on the Sierra Route in Sonora, Mexico, just beyond a year of full use. I took the bus back to Tucson, AZ just to get a new set of Marathon Tour Plus (the name describes the purpose), leaving the bike behind with all gear, to visit Campfire Cycling. They take care of the touring community! Thank you, Josh, Tobias and welcome, Toby to the team! The journey continues...

I cycled to Mexico and toured the Sierra Scenic Route, and this is where the Maraton Plus Tour (The Name Fits) finally gave out... That inner blue you see in the image above was showing at many spots on the tires, no tread remained! I only regret not taking a picture of the destruction of what remained. I took a bus back to Tucson from Mexico, leaving the bike and all gear behind, just to pick up new Marathon Plus Tour tires from Campfire Cycling.

Well worth the investment

These are some tank tread touring tires. I use them for daily commuting here in Tucson where street riding is filled with potholes, broken glass, goathead thorns, and loose grit. These are a heavier tire and when combined with tube sealant they feel pretty chonky. Personally I like the weightier, solid feel and I'm not a sprinter so no loss in my book. These are still a responsive tire and I don't worry about losing traction in loose grit & road debris. Other Schwalbes are less expensive but I haven't had much luck or longevity with those. Definitely feeling more confident with the purchase of these beasts.
