Waterproof XL pannier with roll closure

Bike touring through Europe, family trips, or traveling around the globe? No problem with Ortlieb’s new XL-sized
Back-Roller Pro bike panniers.

(Sold as a Pair. Also available as Singles.)

Overview

Bike touring through Europe, family trips, or traveling around the globe? No problem with Ortlieb’s new XL-sized Back-Roller Pro bike panniers. A total volume of 70 L (4272 cu. in) per pair makes them the largest waterproof panniers available on the market. At the same time, they provide an optimal volume to weight ratio. The reliable roll closure ensures that gear stays dry and clean. An interior pocket helps keep things organized and at hand. Even faster access and additional storage are provided by the outer pocket (8 L/ 488 cu.in.) which is also convenient for storing wet gear.

Thanks to the convenient QL2.1 mounting system with automatically locking hooks, the panniers can be quickly and easily mounted to almost any rack. The mounting system is adjustable without requiring any tools and is suitable for racks with tube diameters up to 16 mm (hook inserts for diameters of 8, 10, and 12 mm included). The hook rail on the lower rear side of the pannier that serves for additional fixation is made of a two-component synthetic combination with an anti-scratch function. This reduces abrasions on the carrier. Thanks to the rotatable QL2.1 mounting hook the system is compatible with almost any bike rack.

Features

  • QL2.1 Mounting System
    • Features of both Upper & Lower Mounting
      • Manufactured from a fiber-reinforced high-tech, anti-scratch thermoplastic that is extremely strong and durable, and in many tests can be stronger than metal parts.
      • Fits rack rails from 8mm to 16mm diameter.
      • See the QL2.1 mounting instructions.
    • Upper Mounting
      • The hook positions are easily adjusted without tools for optimal placement on the rack’s upper rails.
        • More forward placement is better for weight distribution, but rearward positions may be necessary for heal clearance.
      • Quick-lock hooks open automatically by lifting the pannier handles for easy one-handed removal.
      • Includes anti-scratch hook inserts for 8mm, 10mm and 12mm rails.
    • Lower Mounting
      • The semi-elliptical shape of the lower hook rail allows for optimal positioning for secure and easy attachment.
      • The lower hook position along the rail and orientation (in 15 deg steps) is easily adjusted without tools.
      • An additional lower mounting hook can be added on for extra security of the panniers in rough conditions.
  • “Plus” – Cordura, PU Coated – PS36c
    • Highly rated tear and abrasion resistance.
    • Use of high frequency welding to meet the highest of waterproofing specifications.
    • As compared to the “Classic” PD620 fabric, it is lighter in weight and more flexible especially in cold weather, yet it is still very tough.
    • Not as easy to clean as the “Classic” PD620 fabric.
    • Highly durable, polyurethane waterproof inner layer.
  • Roll-Top Closure
    • Simple, effective and highly versatile means of protecting contents against dust and spray water from all directions.
    • The roll closure gains it’s stability and waterproof quality from the thin plastic stiffener bars sewn into the upper end of the material.
    • Height or volume of packed bags can also be reduced by rolling up the material further.
  • Dust & Water Proofness Rating: IP 64
    • 6 = Dust proof, no penetration of dust.
    • 4 = Protected against splash water coming from all directions.
  • Includes two shoulder straps for carrying the panniers off of the bicycle.
  • Highly reflective 3M Scotchlite patches on front and rear of pannier.
  • Internal storage pocket.
  • Lower edge protector with slots for mounting to the Ortlieb Carry System.
  • Typically used as rear panniers but can also be used as large front panniers.

Fantastic service, thank you!

I was very lucky to find these bags in stock at Campfire Cycling. Ortlieb, REI, all the usual big stores had them on back order. Campfire shipped them and they were at my door in just a few days even though I had free shipping. These bags are exactly what I need for our bike trip this Spring. Thank you so much! I’ll be sure to check your store first in the future.

Couldn’t find them anywhere else!

These panniers are great. They are HUGE which is what I wanted. Great for bringing stuff to work or bike packing trips. I couldn’t find them anywhere until I found them on Campfire Cycling.

Nice that this is in stock

HAd trouble finding what I was looking for from other vendors. CFC had it in stock and was able to get it shipped to me in due haste. Thanks. One issue though is I saw it go on sale with a 15% discount within the week of my purchase. I would have appreciated a heads up when I phoned the store.

Campfire Cycling is great, highly recommended

I bought a pair of the Ortlieb Back-Roller Pro Plus pannier bags, and I’ve had a chance to use them for a variety of purposes in the past couple weeks, including: porting camera gear to a natural area by bicycle for a shoot, commuting to the office, and several shopping trips including one that filled the bags completely. Following this experience, I’ve developed some impressions of the bags, and happy to share with other customers for posterity. First of all, the bags themselves are very high quality, sturdy, waterproof, and light. The inner surface is slightly rubbery, but the outer surface has a more canvas-like texture. It is high quality, and I’m sure this is what sets the higher price point of these bags. I prefer this to other Ortliebs that have an outer rubbery texture. As with other Ortliebs, there is a bit of effort involved in opening/closing the main pouch, but that is the trade-off for the security and weatherproofing they offer. As with other Ortliebs, the closure is made by rolling up and then snapping into a strap that slings under the bag (while mounted on the bicycle) or over the shoulder (while carrying on foot). The bag mounts via hooks and there is a security latch that operates via a carrying handle. The bags come with inserts for the rack hooks, for racks with smaller gauges (mine takes the 10mm inserts). These were relatively easy to install, but they’re still breaking in and I’m taking care to ensure that the bags are secure on each trip. The adjustable hook on the lower inside of the bag is great. The bags are voluminous, but punctuated only by smallish interior pockets on the inside. I use these to store keys, eye glasses, and other items I want to be secure. There are outer flap pockets as well, and I was surprised at how much I could stow in them…a modest cable lock, and for the covid era a hand pump with alcohol disinfectant along with spare face masks. I really like the adjustable mounting system, which allowed me to mount these nicely on my road bike, far enough back to avoid heel-scraping. It seems relatively secure, I do not worry so much while I’m riding. The only thing I’m not so happy about are the closure/shoulder straps, which seem a bit cheap and flimsy in comparison to the quality of other components. As a photographer, I own a lot of high quality bags and straps, so I may be biased, but these seem a bit flimsy and are out of place on these bags. I wish they had a better option, I would happily pay the extra cost. The shoulder pad is a kind of hard rubber piece and doesn’t really yield much comfort. And the snaps on the closures require fiddling at times to close or open, and I don’t know if they’ll really last a long time, or suffer much abuse. The strap length adjustment works fine, but it takes some effort to pop the straps in and out of the grooves each time to slide the eyepiece up and down that keeps spare strap from dangling and getting entrained into the wheels and/or cassette…especially as I carry small and/or large quantities. While riding, I also pay attention to the structural response of the bags to movements of the bicycle, steering, wobbling after hitting big bumps, etc.. So far it seems that with heavy-ish loads the bags have a bit of sway in them, because they are not so rigid. This can lead to instability and a bad crash at high speeds downhill, so I’m being careful to get used to the feel of these when loaded up and stepping up into speeds on the big front ring. I’m sure that I’ll have more to say as I use these in the future, but at the moment I don’t regret the purchase and the cost. I have a lot of use for bags like this, and I expect them to last for many many years. So far, so good, but this is only the beginning.

product arrived as promised

most of 70l capacity in top flap opening lid but still large and work good, good for camping or touring but commuting would be awkward with them.
