The original supple tire that started the ultra-wide ‘Road Plus’ segment. We name our tires after the passes in the Cascade Mountains that have inspired them: Switchback Hill (photo) is the first climb on the 360-mile Oregon Outback gravel ride/race. The gravel is quite loose in places, and the extra floatation of the Switchback Hill tires gives you more speed and security when the going gets really rough. 30% of the Oregon Outback is on pavement, so we designed this tire to roll as fast and grip as well as a good racing tire. With this tire, you truly have the best of both worlds.

All Rene Herse tires combine the performance of high-end tubular tires with the convenience of clinchers and the width for all-road riding. The Standard casing is a more affordable option that also offers extra protection against sidewall cuts on sharp rocks. The Extralight casing takes the performance, comfort and feel of your bike to an entirely new level.

The Switchback Hill is tubeless-compatible. When used with tubes, we recommend the SV13 or SV14A tubes.

Made in Japan.

It's hard to review these tires without using the word supple

Yes, I realize the word supple has lost all meaning from overuse in tire reviews, but here we go again. I bought these to replace some very worn WTB Horizons, and the difference is night and day. They slipped onto the rims easily (not always the case as a super tight fit is often complained about w/RH tires), and the ride quality and traction have been outstanding at 40-45psi. The tanwalls look slick as all-get-out, and while it's too early to review longterm puncture and sidewall cut resistance, early indicators are positive. Life is short, buy the good tires from Campfire.

(Still) The Gold Standard

Even after 5+ years of gravel bikes becoming more mainstream and the resurgence of 650b, the quality and performance of the switchback hills are still the gold standard (assuming you live in an area where sidewall cuts are a very rare occurance). They roll super well on pavement, provide excellent grip on hardpack, loose, and even some rocky sections (see note about sidewall cuts) and the tread lasts for quite a while. The ease of purchasing through campfire makes these tires a simple choice when looking for a great all-rounder tire for you 650b bicycle.
