Overview
Schwalbe already had an outstanding touring tire in the Marathon XR, therefore it came as somewhat of a surprise when they decided to phase it out. But, the top brass over at Schwalbe had no intentions of letting the Marathon XR go: Enter the Marathon Mondial. The Marathon Mondial is a very capable all-rounder that is ideal for any cross, gravel, or touring build.
The Schwalbe Marathon Mondial fits into the “do-it-all” category within the Marathon line of tires. Just like its legendary Marathon XR predecessor, it is marketed as the ultimate “expedition” tire, capable of going on any road or trail, hence the balanced tread. Constructed using Schwalbe Evo Technology, the Mondial is built with Schwalbe’s Travestar Compound which is their highest grade, triple compound specifically adapted for touring. Coming in at around 570 to 650g for the 700x 35/40mm options, the Mondial is relatively lightweight compared to other Marathon tires but it retains puncture resistance through a lightweight and cut-resistant anti-puncture Double Defense fabric that will keep you safe from flats.
Once upon a time, an all-purpose tire meant center strips and knobbly patterns that looked the business but were in fact, bulky and cumbersome. The Marathon Mondial is a nimble tire from Schwalbe that manages to be an all-purpose tire for all riding contexts all the while giving very minimal compromises.
