Geometry & Ride Characteristics

CAD of 54cm Surly Midnight Special (Use BikeInsights.com to compare/contrast bicycle geometries)

The geometry of the Surly Midnight Special is designed to accommodate “road plus” tires, providing a unique blend of comfort and speed. Its frame is built to handle 650b x 60mm or 700c x 42mm tires, allowing for significant cushioning on rough surfaces. The bike’s angles and tube lengths are crafted to ensure a responsive yet stable ride, making it suitable for both paved roads and gravel. The geometry emphasizes versatility, allowing riders to explore a wide range of terrains without compromising performance.

The Surly Midnight Special offers a unique riding experience that is both smooth and lively. Its “road plus” design ensures that the ride feels cushioned and comfortable, especially on deteriorating pavement and gravel stretches. The larger tire clearance absorbs road imperfections effectively, providing a plush ride without losing the agility and responsiveness of a road bike. Whether transitioning from pavement to gravel or tackling long, varied rides, the Midnight Special’s riding characteristics make it an adaptable and enjoyable companion on the road.

  • Road Plus Design: The Surly Midnight Special’s geometry is tailored for “road plus” tires, a deviation from traditional road bikes which typically have slimmer profiles. This design allows for a broader tire base, enhancing comfort and versatility on varied terrains.
  • Tire Clearance: While many road bikes might accommodate up to 700c x 28mm or 32mm tires, the Midnight Special is designed for 650b x 60mm or 700c x 42mm tires. This expansive clearance provides more cushioning, especially on rough surfaces, compared to standard road bikes.
  • Head Tube Angle: With angles ranging from 71.0° to 74.0° across sizes, the Midnight Special offers a balance between stability and agility. In comparison, racing bikes might have steeper angles for quick responsiveness, while touring bikes might lean towards shallower angles for stability.
  • BB Drop: A consistent BB drop of 65mm for most sizes (except 70mm for the smallest sizes) ensures a low center of gravity. This is in contrast to cyclocross bikes which might have a higher BB for obstacle clearance, providing the Midnight Special with stability, especially on descents.
  • Wheelbase: The wheelbase, ranging from 993mm to 1050mm, is longer than many aggressive road bikes. A longer wheelbase generally offers more stability, especially at high speeds, making it suitable for long-distance rides on varied terrains.
  • Chainstay Length: A consistent chainstay length of 425mm across all sizes ensures predictable handling. This is slightly longer than some performance-oriented road bikes, providing stability and comfort, especially on rough terrains.
  • Top Tube Length: The actual and effective top tube lengths provide a range that ensures riders get a comfortable reach. Compared to endurance bikes, which might have elongated top tubes, the Midnight Special offers lengths that cater to a more neutral posture.
  • Seat Tube Angle: Ranging from 72.5° to 75.5°, these angles ensure an optimal pedaling position. In comparison, some aggressive race bikes might have steeper seat tube angles for a forward-leaning aggressive posture, while the Midnight Special leans towards a balance of performance and comfort.
  • Standover Height: The varying standover heights across sizes ensure that riders of different heights can comfortably straddle the bike. This is crucial for stop-and-go situations, especially in urban or off-road settings.
  • Stem Length and Angle: The varying stem lengths and a consistent angle of 6° across sizes allow for a balanced steering response. In comparison, some bikes might have shorter stems for quicker handling, but the Midnight Special opts for a middle ground, ensuring both responsiveness and stability.
  • Handlebar Width and Crank Length: These specifications are tailored to the size of the bike, ensuring ergonomic comfort and optimal power transfer. While some bikes might offer a one-size-fits-all approach, the Midnight Special’s geometry ensures size-specific customization for the rider.

Graham uses the bike for commuting, city rides, countryside adventures, Audax events, and occasional bikepacking. He describes the bike as initially “Princess Periwinkle” but after enduring two winters and off-road rides, it underwent a 20-hour stripping process to achieve its current look. As Graham mentions, “It’s now rusting nicely and looks pretty stately, so a new name was called for. I gathered suggestions and put it to a vote: ‘The Duchess’ won, hands down!”

Fast delivery, quality product, competitive price

Campfire Cycling delivered the bike I ordered in great condition and in the timeline they promised. When various steps along the way (received at the store, assembled, shipped to me) were underway / completed they kept me informed and up-to-date. The best part was opening the box, seeing the bike in perfect quality and finally putting it together and taking it for a ride. It rides beautifully and I plan to purchase any future bikes from Campfire Cycling. Thanks for the slick ride!
