Youngsters eager to participate in the series of tests designed to sharpen bike-riding skills sat in the front pews. A few probably prayed for sunshine as Cpls. David Butler and Robert Capizzi from the Collier County Sheriff’s Office demonstrated bike safety first.

Butler explained that a helmet is the most important piece of safety equipment. But it is only good for one crash.

“You can’t buy a new head,” Butler said. “A helmet saved my life and gave me a second chance.”

Bike safety is important because there are two types of bike riders: Those who have fallen and those who will fall.

“Your bike is also safety equipment,” Butler explained.
